The original summer flowering Calla species were introduced into New Zealand in the early 20th Century. Over the last 50 years, several dedicated individuals have continued active breeding programmes. This has allowed the New Zealand industry to produce exciting new varieties with a wide range of vibrant colours, improved bloom forms and longer stems.
New Zealand offers a favourable climate to grow Callas outdoors, but an ever increasing percentage of the total Calla flower crop is grown under cover to exercise greater control over flower quality.
Demand had been such that Callas are New Zealand's second largest flower export crop with blooms being sent to Japan, South East Asia, North America and Europe.
The New Zealand Calla has a modern style which
lends itself superbly for special occasions.
It is very popular with florists, floral artists
and designers for high class and sophisticated flower arrangements.
