The common name for Paeonie is Peony Rose. They have large marshmallow type buds which burst open to reveal a large 15-20cm ruffled flower that closely resembles the common rose. Gorgeous hues of peach, cream, pale pink, white, rose pink and red are available from November to January. Plants require a cool winter to initiate flowering, so all Paeonies in
New Zealand are commercially grown in the cooler South Island. Flowers are long lasting and have a wonderful subtle scent. Recut the stems after transportation and place
in buckets of cool fresh water. These flower are avid drinkers and open quickly on exposure to warm temperatures. Paeonies also dry very well for use in winter bouquets.
A large number of the commercial varieties of
Paeonies grown in New Zealand have their origin from the USA. Growers drive to stay up with world trends by importing new growing stock and being active, breeding programmes will result in a larger range of top quality blooms for world markets in the future.
